RARE TCHAIKOVSKY WORK REDISCOVERED
A rare and unique book, relatively unknown and inaccessible for many years is
now available in a new special edition.
GUIDE TO THE PRACTICAL STUDY OF HARMONY was written by Tchaikovsky for his own
students at the Moscow Conservatory during the last century. It presents the
great Russian composer's views on real music as he was experiencing, conceiving
and writing it. Though actually "lost" this excellent and highly informative
work has remained so little known that one can only wonder at how many other
musical treasures of this magnitude await discovery by serious students of music.
Fascinating for its historical value, the text is, above all, a brilliant and
instructive guide to the intricasies of musical harmony. It contains explanations,
examples and exercises arranged in such a way that it can be used with a class,
in private instruction, or by the individual musician.
Tchaikovsky's Guide, now being offered in English translation, is a complete
course in writing music. In it you will discover the marvelous insights into
music which only a master composer could offer us. [1518] $16.95
THE MUSICIAN'S THEORY BOOK by Asger Hamerik, is one of the most
comprehensive books available today on music theory. It covers fundamentals
of music, harmony, counterpoint, fugue and form.
The text was written by Asger Hamerik, born near Copenhagen in the last century.
Hamerik studied with the Danish composer Nils Gade and later with Hans von Bulow
in Berlin. His compositions were performed in Scandinavian cities, Paris and
Milan. He is said to have been Berlioz's only pupil. Early in 1871 he came to
the U.S. as director of the Peabody Conservatory, where for 27 years he was
a most forceful leader as teacher, conductor, composer and - in this instance,
theorist.
The Musician's Theory Book is the text Hamerik used at the Conservatory. It
represents the work of a real musician in the midst of the real world, yet testing
with actual pupils for over a quarter-century what they can "get" and what they
cannot. The book is clear, concise and practical - an outstanding reference
book for any musician.

MUSICIAN'S GUIDE TO COPYRIGHT AND PUBLISHING [1012] As a musician
your knowledge probably spans the fields of harmony, melody and rhythm. And
should something "pop up" that you question - chances are there's a book on
your shelf which can help lead you to the answer. But what about questions referring
to publishing and copyright? Is this information available to you in a clear
cut, readable format? Probably, if you glance at your books, the answer is no.
A Musician's Guide to Copyright and Publishing provides answers to many
basic questions. For instance, what should be done with a new song? Mail it
to myself? Register it in Washington? Send it to a publisher? Are there conditions
under which things can be xeroxed? - if so, what are they?
Dr. Willis Wager, author of the "Guide", was for 7 years a full time editor
for a leading New York music publisher and subsequently had a great deal of
experience with various publishing firms. He knew publishing from the inside
out. His expertise together with his very delightful, witty style creates for
you not only an informative guide, but a book which is a pleasure to read. It
is an invaluable source of information for the musician and certainly belongs
in any collection of music books. $12.95
